NO FUTURE

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator, Procreate

Project Origin: Kenzie Calvin Freelance

Project Purpose: Album Cover for released EP

Year Created: 2023

A local band called Free Joel, reached out to me to create an Album cover for their new EP “No Future” that recently released. This piece is published and can be found on all streaming platforms.

Inspiration

The band wanted a retro futurism style piece with hidden elements like the Pink Floyd album “A Saucerful of Secrets.”

Process Work

Typography

The typeface I decided to use has a psychedelic feel with a vintage style. The band labels themselves as a psychedelic rock and roll band with influences of blues, funk, and rock. I wanted to match their identity as much as I could with choosing a typeface.

Sketches

During the sketching process I thought of futurism. The main idea surrounding these sketches are vintage cars driving on roads in outer-space with vintage building along the road.

Digital Iterations

The first iteration I really tried to focus on the retro futurism style. This iteration was fun to create but ultimately wasn’t the right fit for the album.

I completely scrapped the first iteration and started with a fresh idea. I wanted to scale back on how many assets were in the main focus and focus on the hidden elements. The hidden elements in this iteration are too easy to find.

Final Work

Hidden Elements

These pieces are all of the hidden elements in the piece.

Final Iteration

For the final design I added an extra layer to perfectly hide elements. They aren’t terribly easy to find and not terribly hard to find either. It’s just right.

The album cover is where vintage assets meet an out of this world landscape with a unique layer of hidden elements representing buried treasures. This piece accomplished turning the design into a piece that aligned with the band’s vision, identity, and inviting listers to explore and discover.
